My love for photography began when I was given a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye on my tenth birthday. I was hooked on the idea that a single click could hold onto a moment forever. I tried color film, but always came back to black and white—drawn to its way of revealing what color sometimes hides: contrast, texture, and emotional depth.
Life steered me into a 40-year career in account management at some of the top advertising agencies in the U.S. Whereas photography had to remain a hobby, I worked alongside professional photographers and designers who helped sharpen my skills.
The onset of digital photography changed everything. Along with Photoshop, a door opened to endless creative possibilities . As you can see from my work, I became a big believer in the notion that photographs are made, not taken.
I moved to Chicago from Michigan right after college. Ever since, I’ve marveled at this city’s architecture and its constant evolution. I’m taken by the many shapes, patterns, lines and architectural forms that keep cropping up. Photography allows me to highlight these forms in new and imagined ways.
Today, I live in Evanston, Illinois, with my wife, Joan, and our two cats. Chicago is just next door, offering world-class architecture and a constant source of inspiration.
My work is available through Fine Art America in a range of formats, from framed prints to canvas and metal. FAA makes also makes my.images available as gifts in many forms, - from coffee cups, blankets, even shower curtains.
Now retired from advertising, I teach photo editing at the Evanston Art Center and as a private tutor. You can reach me at jim@jimsignorelli.me.
